2023: INEC bars commissioners from visiting politicians

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has bared Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from visiting government buildings and contacting politicians in their States of the assignment before the 2023 general elections.

The Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, said this during his remarks at the swearing-in ceremony for 19 RECs in Abuja. Also, he urged the election workers to take responsibility.

Yakubu also reaffirmed his commitment to making sure that the elections in 2023 are free and fair, promising that the commission will not let down Nigerians.

He stated that the electorate will choose the election’s winners through their votes; while affirming that their commitment and allegiance would be to the nation and its people.

While directing the RECs on their responsibility ahead of the election; the INEC Chairman urged them to abide by the law and regulations of the commission.

Directing the RECs, Yakubu said: “As you are deployed to various states of the federation, you will be responsible for human and material resources. Work with the staff and be guided by the provisions of the law and our various regulations and guidelines.

“You should not be visitors to Government Houses and must never hold unofficial meetings with politicians; even after official working hours.

“All matters pertaining to official responsibilities should be conducted in the office attended by the relevant staff. The issues must be properly documented.”
