Three persons have reportedly sustained injuries as Muslims and Christian clash over the use of Hijab by Muslim students in some public schools in Ilorin, kwara state capital.
The violent reportedly happened at Baptist Secondary and Baptist LGEA primary school, Surulere area, Ilorin, around 9:00 am on Wednesday after some Christians blocked the School entrance in order to prevent the Muslims students from gaining entrance into the School premises.
The latest crisis followed the Kwara State Government announcement of the reopening of 10 grant-aided schools recently shut down over the hijab crisis, which did not go well with the some Christians.
The state government had late hours of Tuesday issued a press statement directed the management of the 10 affected schools to allow students resume back to school and continue their academic activities.
According to that statement which was signed by Mrs Mary Kemi Adeosun, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development said “The Kwara State Government has announced immediate reopening of the 10 schools that were recently shut down over Hijaab question on Wednesday March 17, 2021, said government’s peacebuilding efforts continue”
It was gathered that Baptist Church members gathered early hours of Wednesday blocking the entrance of the school with series of the inscription on the placard demanding for the return of their schools and their stand against the usage of hijab in mission schools across the state.
Just as this was going on, Muslim followers also reportedly gathered opposite the school condemning the placard carriers for denying Muslim students access into the school premises.
Police officers allegedly fired teargas into the air to disperse both Christians and Muslims protesting at Baptist School Surulere.
The situation at the Baptist school later brought under control as security agencies comprising of Mobile Police officers, NSCDC, including Nigerian Army officers took over the area to ensure calm.
