The Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU) has disclosed that a total of 71 students would be awarded First Class Degrees during its 12th convocation ceremony slated for Saturday 14th of December, 2024.
The VC stated that the convocation ceremony would mark the graduation of a total number of 6,891 students including first and higher degrees.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, said this on Tuesday while addressing journalists to kick-start the convocation activities at the permanent site of the institution located at Malete in Moro Local Government Area of the Kwara North Senatorial District.
Prof. Jimoh also made known that the institution has recorded many new achievements in her academic growth, research, and infrastructure development in the past year.
“We have grown from 9 Faculties that we presented then to 11. We have created the Faculty of Allied Health Science and Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
“These creations have allowed us to increase our academic disciplines to include: Geography and Remote Sensing, Urban and Regional Planning, Estate Management, Anatomy, Physiology, Mining Engineering, Marketing, Sociology, Cyber Security, and Criminology and Security Studies.
“The take-off of these new courses will increase our undergraduate programmes to 80.
The VC also made known that all the necessary arrangements have been made to commence the courses in the next academic session saying the institution is only awaiting the final approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC).
“With the support and commitment of the state government under the leadership of Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, we have started the 2024/2025 academic session with the attainment of the dreams of the founding fathers of KWASU for it to be a multi-campus institution. This dream is materializing 15 years later.
“The Osi Campus in Ekiti LGA of the State is now hosting the Faculty of Environmental Sciences while the Ilesha-Baruba Campus in Baruten LGA is hosting the Faculty of Agriculture and there is also the upgrade of the Kwara State Teaching University Teaching Hospital to cater for the clinical needs of our MBBS programme.
“These are achievements we could not have achieved without the support of the Visitor and Governor. We are indeed grateful.”
The VC also highlighted the institution’s achievements in research and Infrastructure stated that, “Our University has been in the news for her strides in the electric vehicles conversion and lately hybrid CNGcomversion. Our researchers are also making waves through the winning of grants.
“New infrastructures like; the magnificent Ultramodern Performing Arts Complex, Basic Medical Science building, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and Energy Village building, 250 capacity lecture theatre, 500 capacity lecture hall and 104 bed space hostel, among others.”
The VC however highlighted the state of the road from Shao to Malete as their major challenge and appeal to the state government for intervention “providing this crucial infrastructure is beyond the ability of the University, and we call on our proprietor, the Kwara State government to intervene with the reconstruction of the Shao-Malete road and extend the intra-campus road network.”
The convocation activities continue with the unveiling of the Exhibition and football competition among academic and non-academic staff on Tuesday while Emeritus Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo will deliver a convocation lecture on Thursday on the topic “The Optimum Utilization of Nigeria’s Energy Resources for the Sustainable Growth and Development of the Nation” followed by a stage play of the film, titled ‘Mojagbe’ and presentation of Certificates to graduating students on Saturday.
