Nigerian Workers Group (NWG) has warned the federal government not to transfer the cost of the subsidy on workers.

This is contained in a statement issued by the group and signed by its President Dr. David Kayode Ehindero FCPA, in commemoration of 2023 Democracy Day.

The statement read in parts: “As we celebrate the beauty of democracy and the progress we have made over the years, we are reminded of the challenges that continue to plague our democracy.

“Electoral misconduct and other factors have cast a shadow over our democracy, and we have also faced leadership challenges that have prevented us from fully realizing the gains of democracy.

“Nigerian politicians have often been ill-prepared to provide good leadership, and many of them have become accidental leaders.

“While the legitimacy of the new Nigerian President’s victory is still being questioned, Nigerians are ready to give him a chance to prove his leadership acumen. We believe he is a Democrat who is well-equipped for leadership.

“However, we call for a serious look into the subsidy removal and urge the government to avoid transferring the cost onto Nigerian workers, as this could greatly erode their purchasing power and standard of living.

“We believe that democracy can thrive in Nigeria if we work together to address its challenges and build a brighter future for all Nigerians. On this Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to democracy and work towards a better future for our country”.
