The Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly Moses Sule has resigned.
Sule stated that his resignation was borne out of sacrifice, patriotism, and desire for the state to move forward.
He said: “Certain things are happening and certain things are going on; some of us need to make things and decisions that will help us out of the quagmire. Nobody coarse me, it is my personal volition, sacrifices have to be made and I did this for stability and for Plateau State to move forward”.
Sule representing Mikang Constituency was elected speaker on 13th June 2023.
In his stead, Gabriel Dewan representing the Pankshin North constituency and the only member of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) has been elected as the new speaker.
The lawmakers elected the 30-year-old parliamentarian after the resignation of the former speaker during plenary on Tuesday.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after his emergence as the speaker of the tenth assembly, Dewan stated that his priority was to unite members for the good of the state.
“I appreciate members of the tenth assembly for finding me worthy to lead this assembly at this critical moment,” he said.
“As you know, I am coming as the sole member of the Young Progressives Party, and for my colleagues to deem it fit to elect me as speaker, is not something to joke with. It is a mandate to be taken with sincerity and honesty.”
The new speaker urged Plateau residents to look beyond political parties, religion, and ethnicity at this critical period in the state.
“All I am asking from Plateau citizens, especially the electorates, is that they should not allow any politician to cause enmity among ourselves because politics will come and go but Plateau will remain,” the new speaker added. (Channels)
