Ritual killing: Islamic Body Advocates Public Enlightenment Against Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome, Advises Govt. On Way Out

Muslim clerics and traditional rulers have been called upon to step up the enlightenment against the get-rich-quick syndrome, especially among youth in society.

The Amir of ‘The Companions’  Ilorin district, Mallam Ismail Okunlola, made the call in a statement issued to condemn the recent brutal killing of a final year student of College of Education Ilorin, Hafsoh Lawal, by a self-acclaimed Islamic cleric, Abdulrahman Bello.

The Islamic body noted that the core values of family bond and unity should continue to be emphasised, adding that the act of neighbourliness where neighours could discipline any errant child should be restored.

The syndrome of getting rich quickly through illegal means should be frowned upon by all Nigerians, just as parents are advised not to shirk their responsibilities of proper
upbringing of their wards.

The statement also called on government at all levels to ensure that full implementation of judgments passed by competent courts of law, especially as it affects murder, are implemented without delay, while calling on governors to append their signatures to such judgements without delay.

The curriculum of traditional Arabic/Islamic schools according to the statement should be overhauled while periodic seminars should be organized for their Mallams and teachers on how to constantly monitor the studies of students of such schools, especially, by their parents.

The Amir, however admonished the youth to avoid acts that could destroy their future or tarnish the image of their family
