The International Press Centre, IPC, in partnership with the European Union, has organised an interactive session with selected media executives and practitioners in Kwara State on the role of media in strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.
The one-day interactive session held at the E-Phoenix hotel, Ilorin was anchored by the International Press Centre, IPC, Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, who highlighted the core areas of interest of IPC and EU to includes: fact checking of electoral information, women’s participation in politics, reporting of People With Disabilities (PWD) involvement in democracy, giving voice to the people in the rural communities through media coverage, and electioneering campaign promises.
Arogundade emphasised the importance of the aforementioned areas ahead of the 2027 general election, saying statistics had revealed that the media executives and practitioners still had a serious role to play in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and all-inclusive governance.

Taking the participants back to the history of IPC and EU partnership in Nigeria, he said the EU through the European Support for Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme has been funding IPC in supporting the media to champion democratic governance through capacity building, interactive and educative sessions for media practitioners across the states in Nigeria.
He, however charged the media executives and practitioners to take deliberate interest in advancing democracy and governance by taking a deliberate interest in inculcating some of the mentioned core areas in their media reportage saying this would further give their platform recognition and be counted among the worthy partnerships in IPC/EU efforts in deepening the country’s democracy.
“More still needs to be achieved in strengthening the nation’s democracy through media advocacy and campaign with unlimited opportunities awaiting any media practitioners and platforms doing this credibly,” he said.
Contributing, the participants drawn from the online and print media commended the IPC and EU for bringing the programme to Kwara and found them worthy of being beneficiaries of what they described as a highly informative and educative interactive session.

They further pledged to intensify efforts in discharging their media responsibilities most especially in the areas of IPC/EU interest which they all agreed that it would further enhance Nigeria democracy and good governance.
In his remarks, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abdulallateef ‘Lanre Ahmed expressed appreciation to the organisers and urged the participants on their roles in strengthening democracy and good governance.
