Dr. Ibrahim Salawu, a presenter at a media parley organized by the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP), has called on online media practitioners to eschew fallacies and promote professionalism in their reporting.

Speaking on the topic “The Zoning Debate in Kwara State: Historical Context and Present Reality”, Dr. Salawu emphasized that online media is the primary source of information for the younger generation, and as such, practitioners must strive to be responsible and accurate in their reporting.

He noted that the online space is saturated with information, making it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction, and urged practitioners to use their platforms to shape the narrative and promote inclusivity.

Dr. Salawu also discussed the history of zoning in Nigerian politics, tracing it back to the PDP’s emergence in 1999, and how it has become a major issue in Kwara State’s politics.

He emphasized that zoning is not just a geographical issue, but a reflection of how democratic politics in Nigeria grapples with inclusion, historical inequity, and the quest for legitimate leadership succession.

Also speaking at the event, University don, Dr. Bakare Rafiu, warned journalists against allowing personal emotions, sentiments, and value judgments to influence political analysis. He stressed that credible and objective journalism is essential for empowering citizens to make informed political choices and fostering good governance in Kwara State.

ASKOMP Chairman, Salihu Shola Taofeek, speaking at Media Roundtable, said
“Kwara’s online media will not be instruments of division. We will not trade integrity for influence. We will not sacrifice ethics on the altar of political patronage. Instead, we choose professionalism. We choose responsibility. We choose the public interest.”

The event, held on January 30, 2026, aimed to engage online media practitioners in discussions on the role of media in shaping the narrative ahead of the 2027 elections in Kwara State.
