21 people have been confirmed dead on Sunday, 5 July,2020 after a boat conveying a church members to an annual convention capsized in River Benue in Benue State.
The capsized boat was reported to have 23 passengers on board, who were said to be Christians traveling for their annual convention when the unfortunate accident happened.
According to an eyewitness, “the people were all Christian faithful who were going on a journey for their annual Convention when the boat in which they were traveling capsized, with no survivor.
“Immediately we heard of the incident we put a call to police who went in search of the drowned people.”
Meanwhile, Benue State Police Command has confirmed the incident but said that two people were rescued alive.
According to a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Catherine Anene, 23 people were involved in the boat accident.
Anene’s statement read in part, “On 05/07/2020 at about 14:30hrs, information was received that 23 members of ECAN Church, Ijaha, Makurdi Local Government boarded a boat to attend a conference across River Benue.
“At the midstream, the boat sank into the river. Marine Police search party were deployed to the scene where only two persons were rescued alive”
