ASUU Strike: Chairman Pro-Chancellor of State Universities Call for Tolerance, Donates 10k Notebook

The Chairman Committee of Pro Chancellor of the State Owned Universities in Nigeria, Mallam Yusuf Olaolu Ali, SAN, has appealed to the body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to look at the bigger picture in terms of damage the proposed strike will cause the country’s educational system.

The legal luminary, made the call in his office in Ilorin, today, Thursday while handing over 10,000 notebook to the Osun state commissioner of Education, Folorunsho Bamisayemi, for the students of the public school in Osun state.

Appealing to the leadership of ASUU and their members to have a larger look at the implications of all these strikes in making their demands.

“We urge ASUU leadership and members of the union to have a larger look at the implications of these strikes, not only on the standard of our education but acceptability of our certificates outside of our country. Anybody who follows closely, the issue of ranking of universities, one of the greatest criteria used is stability of educational calendar, which we have been missing for years in our country.

“I want to appeal as parent, citizen and as an educationist myself, to ASUU to choose other method to get whatever it’s their right from the government, knowing fully well that it’s common knowledge that Nigeria economy is in a doldrum, knowing fully well that Nigeria has too many unsatisfied social intervention in terms of infrastructure, health, even water supply and all these also deserved attention by government. This type of strike will cause more problem for our educational system”

The chairman pro Chancellor of state-owned universities, also cautioned and advised government not to enter into agreement they can not fulfil.

“I want to appeal to government. One, they should never enter into agreement they know that they don’t have wherewithal to see through. Two, government should not at any point succumb to social pressure to agree to say things they don’t have capacity to accomplish. Thirdly, government should look at whatever they can do to ameliorate the conditions of academic and tertiary institutions generally”.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, however noted that the happening in the education sector is a reality that no government can fund education by itself, adding that “as a pro-chancellor for six years in state owned university, I know what it takes to navigate a very very turbulent ocean of payments of salaries, emoluments, in the face of doing things with Public resources”

Talking about his foundation, Olaolu Ali, said the foundation which founded and sole sponsor by him formalized in year 2009 with special interest in indigent citizens, healthcare, education, enlightenment and feeding of the poor.

Stated that the foundation built a Trauma center, a Renal Dialysis center, assisted of over 600 patients by settle their hospital bills within and outside Nigeria, and renovated of part of General Hospital, Ilorin, donation of hospital equipments to children Hospital located at Ojagboro, Ilorin.Awards of scholarship to students in Ilorin and Ifetedo, building of E-library and hostels in higher institutions and annual payment of WAEC and NECO fees of 50 indigent students of Ibadan Boy’s High School in Ibadan, payment of part of law school fees of indigent students”

Thanking the financial of the Yusuf Ola-Olu Ali foundation, Yusuf Ola-Olu Ali, SAN, for the donation of the exercise book to the pupils of Osun public schools, Commissioner of Education, Folorunsho Bamisayemi, said Osun state government immensely appreciated the donor for his regular support for the state and less privileged children.

“Our donor efforts at giving back to society is legendary and we are not surprised that, you are doing this again today. This is one of the several numerous ways you have been giving back, particularly to us in Osun state, in terms of visible donations like this, and offering your services and wealth of experience to the development of the state. We thank, appreciate you immediately and we pray God will continue to bless you”
