Eminent scholars and jurists have poured enconmiums on the pioneer Grand Khadi of Kwara State and pioneer chairman of the board of trustees of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), the late Justice AbdulKadir Orire for his invaluable contribution to educational development and humanity during his life time.
Speakers, including a former Grand Khadi of Kwara State, Justice Idris Haroon, Professors Saudat AbdulBaqi and Lateef Oladimeji, national coordinator of Muslim Media Watch Group, Alh Ibrahim Abdullahi, eulogized the virtues of the late Orire at the event marking the 70th anniversary of MSSN and third annual lecture in honor of pioneer Grand Khadi of Kwara State.
The programme was held at the FOMWAN Hall, Fate road, Ilorin, Kwara State.
In his presentation, Justice Idris Haroon posited that Orire up to the time of his death gave his all to humanity, adding that: ” Justice Orire assisted MSSN and similar bodies morally and financially. He was grand patron of MSSN, Kwara for many years before becoming BoT chairman at the national level. He always encouraged students to embrace excellency in their educational pursuits.
” He supported immensely educational programmes. He supported scholarship scheme to ensure that indigent Muslim youths pursue education career. He lived and served humanity. He inspired young Muslims.
“Baba Orire had special interest in the young ones. I can’t forget him in my success as a judge. Very transparent, honest and incorruptible. Very fearless in pursuing the truth and he was pious.”
The pioneer female professor of Mass Communication at the University of Ilorin, Saudat AbdulBaqi, said Orire played pivotal roles too numerous to count in the evolvement of MSSN in Nigeria, noting that, ” from the foundation, consolidation and the physical existence across the 36 state area units and FCT, Justice Orire was the pillar, patron and supportive father, standing very firm in all situations.
” This resonates with his philosophy about the youth as the Leaders of tomorrow! He practicalised his belief in this ideology and philosophy by supporting and assisting morally and financially the MSS of Nigeria, MCAN, YOUMBAS, NACOMYO and many Islamic youth organisations all over the country.
“As MSS of Nigeria celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, Baba Orire’s contribution to it was for more than 60 years, as his support for the society started since 60s when he returned to the country after his studies to continue his teaching career before joining the judiciary in early 70s.”
AbdulBaqi added that Orire’s involvement and engagement with the youth, particularly through the MSSN and other platforms, include his advocacy for educational reforms and the establishment of Muslim-friendly policies in educational institutions, mentorship programmes, public lectures/ seminars, advocacy for youth empowerment, engagement with students leadership, and support for educational initiatives.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Kolawole Jimoh, highlighted the role of MSSN in fostering unity among Muslim students, promoting education, and contributing to social development in the country.
For his part, Prof Lateef Oladimeji of Al- Hikmah University, Ilorin said ” :
Baba Orire fought against victimization of Muslims.He did his best . We will continue to remember him because he had come and made his impact.”
The national coordinator of MMPN, Alh Ibrahim Abdullahi said: ” Baba Orire was outstanding in the propagation of Islam.”
He urged MSSN leadership across board to encourage the formation of the society in schools .
Barrister Musa Orire, who responded on behalf of the Orire family thanked the organisers of the programme.
Dignitaries present at the event included Prof Badmas Yusuf and the deputy Amirah of FOMWAN in Kwara State, Hajia Biliqis Oladimeji, students and leaders of various Islamic organisations.
