Boko Haram attack voters in Gwoza, injures 5

Five persons were injured on Saturday in an attack on voters by Boko Haram insurgents in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

Confirming the incident to newsmen in Maiduguri, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abdu Umar said the terrorists fired several gunshots at voters from the top of Mandara Mountains.

He said five persons sustained injuries in the attack. They were two females and three males.

“Efforts of the military within the area of responsibility helped in chasing the terrorists, forcing them to flee due to the superior firepower,” he said.

The police chief said normalcy was quickly restored, and voting exercise continued while the injured ictims were referred to the hospital for treatment.

The attack confirms security fears raised prior to the presidential election. The Northeast, Northwest and Southeast (especially), had been touted as areas of high security risks going into the polls.

During a joint press conference on Thursday at the Defence Headquarters Abuja, the military, Police and Department of State Services, DSS, had assured Nigerians of adequate security.
