A call has been made to all females, age 18 years and older, to always embark on regular self examination of their breast and report noticeable unusual differences to nearby medical facilities as a way of warding off cancer in its early stage.
This call was made by the Kwara state President of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Dr. Mosunmola Rafiat Folorunsho, in a release made available to journalists in Ilorin, Kwara state in preparation for the 2020 Pink Month, from 1st to 31st October.
Dr Folorunsho explained that MWAN is a national based Non Governmental Organization consisting of all female medical doctors and dentists across Nigeria and had been in existence for decades taking care of the general wellbeing of females in the society as their own way of supporting governments in ensuring that woman and children live healthy lives.
The Medical practitioner said that the Pink Month 2020 is organized in collaboration with the Civil Society for Cancer Eradication in Nigeria (CiSCANEN) to raise awareness on Breast Cancer related diseases because early detection increases survival.
Dr Folorunsho further explained that the month of October is dedicated to breast cancer awareness spanning 1st October till the end with several activities lined up such as screening and sensitization of market women across the state as well as female arms of religious bodies.
In his contribution, Mr. Banjo Famuyiwa, State Coordinator, CiSCANEN explained that attaining health standard is a fundamental human right according to the World Health Organization, (WHO).
Mr. Banjo who explained that Breast Cancer treatment is very expensive urged the state government to key into stemming the tide by providing means of screening that is readily available, accessible, timely, acceptable, and affordable through his NGO.
“The programme comences from every October, 1st to 31st every year. We urge our women to undertake regular check of their breasts and report any unusual swelling, lump, abnormal discharge from the nipple, any change in the appearance of the nipple, any swelling in the armpit and any form of breast anomaly which may or may not come along with pain to medical facilities close to them.”
“We dedicate the month to raising awareness and screening women for breast cancer. We encourage regular breast self examination because early detection, prompt and appropriate interventions is key in cancer management. Get a clinical breast examination before it’s too late.”
