The Kano state Police Command yesterday confirmed the alleged murder of one Miss Ummukulthum Sani of Janbulo Quarters in Kano by one Mr Gheng Chu, a Chinese national based in the state.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Kano yesterday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, said the command received a distress call at about 10 pm on Friday, following which the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lawal Abubakar, dispatched a team to the scene.
The 22-year-old victim was said to be Chu’s lover until she was murdered on Friday.
Haruna said: “The 47- year-old Chinese visited the residence of his girlfriend, Miss Ummukulthum Sani (22) and they engaged in an argument before he allegedly stabbed her many times with a knife.”
He explained that when the police team reached the scene of the incident, they rushed the victim to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in the city, where she was confirmed dead.
Haruna also confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying that an in-depth investigation into the case had begun on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
Narrating the incidence to newsmen yesterday, Ummukulthum’s bereaved mother confirmed that her daughter was in relationship with the suspect before she got married about three years ago but the marriage failed after three months, which made the Chinese to stalk their house even though her daughter never paid attention to Chu.
“But on that fateful Friday evening, the sound of his knock on the gate was too disturbing and I decided to open it. He pushed me and gained entry into her room. He stabbed her multiple times with a knife in spite of my efforts to rescue her
“My cry for help was also not noticeable due to heavy rain.”
Ummukulthum’s mother said it was a passerby who overheard the screaming in her daughter’s room that gained entry into the room through the window and got hold of Chu.
She said the deceased was rushed to the hospital by the people that came to rescue her but she was eventually confirmed dead.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Ummukulthum was a youth corps member serving in Sokoto State before her death.
It was gathered that she was in a relationship with the suspect when she met her ex-hubby and he (suspect) supported the marriage.
It was also learnt that when he heard of her divorce, he returned to her and she reportedly refused to accept him back.
‘How my daughter met killer lover’
Speaking on the death of Ummukulthum, an alumnus of Kano State School of Nursing and Midwifery, after her burial according to Islamic rites at about 10 am yesterday, her bereaved mother said: “She was my daughter. He (the Chinese man) was always coming around wanting to see her and she had been refusing.
“This time around, he kept knocking on the door. When I was fed up with him hitting the door loudly, I opened the door and he pushed me aside and got in and started stabbing her with a knife.
