The Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (Eko DisCo) has announced the formal registration of Excel Electricity Distribution Company Limited as a 100 percent subsidiary. The new company will oversee electricity distribution operations within Lagos State in line with state regulatory requirements.

This development follows the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023, which transferred regulatory powers in the electricity sector to state governments. In compliance with this law, the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC)directed Eko DisCo to establish a separate entity for its Lagos operations. Consequently, Excel Electricity Distribution Limited has been registered to operate under the regulatory oversight of both LASERC and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

EKO DISCO REMAINS INDEPENDENT AND OPERATIONAL

Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc clarified that it has not been sold or taken over. The company remains a fully recognised and operational legal entity incorporated under Nigerian law, with no transfer of ownership or dissolution.

The ownership structure also remains unchanged. West Power and Gas Limited (WPG) retains a 60 percent shareholding, while the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) holds 40 percent on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Eko DisCo continues to uphold strong corporate governance and full regulatory compliance.

EXCEL DISCO TO MANAGE LAGOS OPERATIONS

Excel Electricity Distribution Limited will take over all electricity distribution functions previously handled by Eko DisCo in Lagos. Customers will continue to be served by the same personnel and will make payments through existing channels. As the transition progresses, customers will gradually see the name change from Eko DisCo to Excel DisCo, with no disruption to service delivery or customer support.

EKO DISCO IS NOW A HOLDING COMPANY

As part of this transition, Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc has been restructured into a holding company. The management emphasised that this regulatory adjustment will not affect ongoing operations or service efficiency within Lagos State.

Eko DisCo reaffirmed its commitment to reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity supply across its coverage areas. The company stated that the registration of Excel DisCo is a structural and regulatory alignment, not a takeover or divestment.

This clarification, according to management, is to ensure accurate public understanding of recent developments in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
