A community health service provider, Azeez Amuda Olayinka, has advised on the importance of consuming certain healthy foods for better eyesight.
Olayinka who is popularly known as ‘Baba Oloju’ gave the medical advice on Tuesday during a lecture delivered at health talk programme organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kwara Council as part of their 2024 press week activities.
He emphasized the need for extra care and good maintenance of the eyes, highlighting that consuming healthy food plays a crucial role in eye care.
He said that obtaining needed nutrients for proper body and eye function does not always require expensive supermarket foods.
“As humans, there are ways to care for our eyes by ensuring we eat healthy food. We don’t need to buy expensive supermarket foods to get the nutrients but local food items in the market can help get your body and eyes to function properly.
“Taking Palm oil, Pawpaw and Carrot which are not that expensive are very rich in ‘Vitamin A’ and highly recommended for maintaining of good eyesight.“
The expert also talked about monitoring diet in order to have good vision, listing mango, dry fish and other foods that contains protein and calcium, which are good for vision.
The ophthalmologist also cautioned against visiting quack for eyes treatment and glasses, said many people had ignorantly damaged their eyes with this uncivilized manner.
“It is not advisable to visit roadside medicine shops, and pharmacists anytime you are noticing issue with your eyes. They are not experts, and this could lead to wrong recommendation of drugs that would lead to further damage of one’s eyes.
“It is also very damaging to be applying camphor in the name of healing eyes of Apollo. Many people have lost their eyes unknowingly with this treatment. Similarly, applying breast Milk, most especially among nursing mothers is also very condemnable and can lead to eye problems for a child.”
He however advised that people should always read in a very illuminated environment and take rest for like two to three minutes after reading for an hour.
He also preaches personal hygiene, especially at home urging mothers to be always neat and clean up their environment against babies that always put whatever they see around in their mouth.

Organizers of the Press Week said that the programme would continue on Wednesday with a seminar for members holding at a resort centre in Offa, adding that the grand finale is on Thursday at Diamond Event Centre, Yidi Road Ilorin with a public lecture to be delivered by Professor Lukman Adeshina Azeez of the University of Ilorin and Senator Umar Suleiman Sadiq of Kwara North, on the topic: ‘Accountability and Transparency: How Journalism Can Foster Good Governance’ and ‘democracy good governance and Role of Citizens’ respectively.
