Help us nurture our children, Ebonyi women tells men

Women of Ebonyi state have called on their male folks to help out in nurturing the children.

They made the call on Saturday during the women’s August meeting at Afikpo local government area of the state.

August meeting is a yearly event organized by women all over Igbo land, the programme gives the opportunity for them to evaluate their motherly nature and brings about development in the communities.

2023 August meeting was flagged off on the 8th of August by Her Excellency, Chief Mrs Uzoamaka Nwifuru in Abakaliki with the theme ‘Mother where is your child’.

Represented by a lawmaker representing Ebonyi North East at the state House of Assembly, Mrs. Nwifuru commended the theme of the programme.

She noted that the theme for 2023 August meeting was a wake up call to parent in this era indiscipline.

She said, “The theme of this years August meeting as was established by Her Excellency is tagged ‘ mother where is your child’. The essence of the theme is to awaken the consciousness of mothers on the way about of their children, big or small. It is for you to take the proper upbringing of your children, for you to mold their characters”.

She further revealed plans of the state government to better the lives of women and children in the meeting.

Addressing the women,Wife of the local government chairman, Mrs. Sandra Ibiam, appealed to the men to always give their wives the necessary support in molding the children to become better persons in future and challenged the women to live up to their responsibilities.

“I therefore call on the women of Afikpo local government to be alive to their responsibilities by doing their best especially in predisposing our children of godly lifestyles. It is only through this that we can stamp out drug abuse, rape and other social vices out of our society.

“We are also requesting our husbands to continue to assist our efforts in nurturing our children in a way that they would grow to become the pride of their generation.

“We organized this August meeting to sensitize our women on gender based violence. We want them to always run to my office to report such cases when they hear or experience it.
We organized this meeting in the local government to let the women and those in the villages and communities know that Her Excellency is kicking against all forms of gender-based violence”.

On his part, Chairman of the LGA, Mr. Uchenna Ibiam urged the women to respect their husband and avoid attitudes that leads to battering, and promised to support the fight against gender based violence.

The women were tutored on all forms of gender based violence and child trafficking and it’s consequences.

Mrs. Ibiam used the occasion to empower some widows in the local government. (Blueprint)
