On this day, we remember the grief and sufferings that Nigerians had to endure to achieve the long-awaited freedom and sovereignty of our Country.

Though independent in the literal sense, our great but struggling Nation is yet dependent on others on major spheres of survival – food, energy, technological, clothing supplies,et al.

However, there are glimmers of hope from our glittering young people. They have continued to distinguish themselves in science, arts, innovation, sports, creativity, and community development.

The government and indeed the elite class must put in place programs to build the youths, as youth development is a propeller to building a great Nation. We can’t afford to toy with this section of our population and the potentials they hold for our dear Country, especially with respect to their education.

It is quite appalling that those affected by today’s ASUU strike are in same age bracket with some of the front-liners of our independence struggle. Irrespective of failure on the part of the government, the strike must be urgently resolved by stakeholders in the education sector in the interest of the future of this Nation.

I also use this medium to commiserate with those who were affected by flood and rainstorm in parts of Patigi local government, Ilorin township, and other parts of Kwara state. May God console them during this time of trial.

Lastly, I congratulate all well-meaning Nigerians as we mark another anniversary of our independence. We must not despair nor lose hope, but continue to pray for our dear Nation to fulfill the greatness it was destined for.

May Nigeria be great!
