Int’l Girl Child Day: MAI Foundation Distributes Stationaries to Female Students in Kwara

As the world mark 2022 International Day for the Girl Child, Mohammed Ajia Ibrahim (MAI) Foundation has distributed hundreds of stationaries to secondary school girls in Ilorin Grammar School, Ilorin West and Government Senior Secondary School, Alapa in Asa local governments of Kwara state.

MAI Foundation is saddled with the responsibility of rendering developmental support to humanity in the areas of education, health, and infrastructure among others.

The International Day of the Girl Child which holds every October 11 is set aside to recognize, and empower girls and amplify their voices.

Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed Ajia, a philanthropist and the Founder of MAI Foundation, in a message delivered by Hajia Sikirat Shehu, the Director of Communication, Media and Publicity of the foundation, identifies with the girls by reaching out to them with some necessities required for their quality education.

He explained that the day is designated to eliminate gender-based challenges that little girls face around the world, such as child marriages, poor learning opportunities, violence, and discrimination, as he observed that to eliminate such discrimination, there is a need for stakeholders to provide basic needs for the education of the female children to brighten their future.

Ajia, who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, admonished the girls not to stop learning new things, saying, “that is one of the main mantras to become a successful and a strong woman in future”.

He added that to become a woman of substance; a girl child must be committed to her studies and be prayerful, “as prayers will make dreams come true in life”.

“As a girl, you should never stop learning and try to upgrade your sense of knowledge about any subject you learn in school. After all, ‘knowledge is beauty’.

“Try to remain close to people who know and understand you better because these people will offer advice that will help you explore and face challenges in your field of interest.

“A woman is a symbol of pride and strength. If she can cook food for many people; then she can fetch fortunes too. Try to be a guide for yourself and be an independent soul forever”.

In her submission, Mrs Ramat Adeshina, Former Kwara Commissioner for Women Affairs, Sports, Social Tourism and Culture, enjoined the students to be focused and avoid anything capable of derailing their efforts to get an education such as unwanted pregnancy.

She pointed out that with education and hard work, the girl child will stand out among her peers and can attain any position in life.

Mrs. Rasheedat Iliyas Oladotun, the Founder, of Midas Mentoring Club said International Girl Child Day, was initiated in 2011 but was firstly declared on 11 October 2012.

She said that the theme for 2022 girl child day: “Digital Generation, Our Generation” is apt, adding that girls too have a responsibility to contribute their quota to the development of society.

The facilitator, advised the students to be steadfast in their quests for knowledge and beware of the negative use of the internet and social media saying, “use the digital technology to impact yourselves and the society positively.”

She posits that girls must utilise social media to showcase their innovation, and talents such as textile, sewing, and hairdressing among other entrepreneurial opportunities.

In her speech, Mrs Muslimat Iyabo Abdullahi, the Principal of Ilorin Grammar School, commended the MAI foundation for the kind gesture, describing it as an act which will positively impact and shape the lives of girls child in the state and the country at large.

Also speaking, Mrs Binta Balogun, Vice Principal, Administration, of Government Senior Secondary School, Alapa, equally appreciated MAI Foundation and appealed to the the foundation to provide scholarships to best performing students to further their morale and education to a higher level.

The high point of the event was the distribution of stationaries including exercise books, mathematical sets as well as soft drinks to the students.

The students, however, expressed gratitude to the founder, MAI Foundation for providing them with Educational materials and pray God to continue to enrich him.
