Journalist must cultivate the habit of practicing development driven journalism – Adeboye

A veteran Journalist in Kwara State, Yomi Adeboye has charged journalists in the state to cultivate the habit of practicing and encouraging development driven journalism as well as investigative journalism.

He said the profession has a good leverages with Freedom of Information Act  which allows journalist to be able to discharge their duties effectively as compared to the military era.

Adeboye, who is the General Manager of The Herald Newspaper gave the admonition yesterday when speaking at the maiden workshop organised by ALBARKA FM in collaboration with Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism and Mc Arthur Foundation.

He noted that journalist should begin to hold government accountable in terms of their various policies, decision making and resources allocation adding that it will go along way in benefiting the society.

According to him, “We must begin to cultivate the habit of practicing and encouraging development driven journalism, investigative journalism. Good enough we have some leverages now unlike in the past, during the military era when journalist were restricted.

“Our major roles as journalist is for journalist to report the people to the government and the government to the people. If we can take that phrase and expand it, it covers everything.

“For us to be able to do that, our major roles as journalist is to report the people to the government and the government to the people. If we can just take this phrase and expand it, it covers everything. What are the concerns, the worries, the need of the people so the government can be aware”, he said.

Also speaking, Zainab Sanni of the News Verifier Africa, sensitised journalist on the importance of fact-checking in curbing the spate of Information disorder in the country.

She, however, advised journalists to take time to verify content using various fact-checking tools and avoid being in a rush to break a particularly story that is contradictory.
