Politics in Kwara State is beginning to wear a dangerous garment as we approach the 2027 elections. In some political gatherings, a retrogressive refrain has returned: “It is our turn.” Certain politicians and respected party leaders and elders from Kwara Central are clamouring for Kwara Northern candidate come 2027, while certain leaders from Kwara South are equally insisting that the governorship must rotate to their districts come 2027.
The Kwara First Forum, being an advocate of competence and good governance sees all these agitation as pure selfishness and self centredness.
Let us not sugar-coat it–this is nothing but selfish politics clothed in the garb of ethnic entitlement. And if left unchecked, it threatens to derail the unity and steady progress our state has enjoyed under the stewardship of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The governorship of Kwara is not a birthright to be passed around like an inheritance. It is not a stool to be rotated among senatorial districts for appeasement. Leadership is too serious to be reduced to sectional bargaining. What matters is competence, vision, and capacity. What matters is who can sustain and consolidate the remarkable legacy of Governor AbdulRazaq.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is the dominant political force in Kwara today, not because of noise but because of organisation and leadership. It is a party with structure and discipline. And in Kwara State, the party has a leader–Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. He has the responsibility, alongside the APC structure, to guide the emergence of a capable successor.
Rather than strengthen the party and support the governor to ensure a victorious outing in 2027, these sectional agitators are plotting to weaken the house from within. That is political sabotage and selfishness.
History offers lessons. States that allowed sectional politics to fester ended up with disunity and instability.
The truth is simple: the next governor of Kwara State cannot be a governor of Central or South or North. He must be governor of all Kwarans. He must have the competence to consolidate on Gov. AA’s achievements, the character to unify rather than divide.
Kwara stands today at a critical juncture. The progress made under AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq must not be reversed. The unity of our state must not be fractured. Sectional agitators must not be allowed to hold us hostage.
Our task as a people is clear: rally behind the governor, trust his judgement in guiding succession, strengthen the APC for victory, and insist on competence as the only true currency of leadership.
