The Kwara State Government has read the riots act to some proprietors of private coaching centres across the state that fun of poaching students from public schools under the pretext of preparing them for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.

The Executive Director of the Agency for Mass Education, Saka Yusuf, delivered the warning during a meeting with the executive members of the Association of Private Coaching Centres of Nigeria, held in his office on Tuesday.

In a statement issued by the Press Secretary of the Agency for Mass Education, Anigilaje Rasheedat, and made available to the press on Wednesday, the government cautioned that proprietors engaging in such practices would face the full weight of the law.

Yusuf expressed displeasure that, despite ongoing sensitisation and advocacy efforts by the agency, many coaching centres continued to flout regulations by poaching students, particularly those in Junior Secondary School 3, Senior Secondary 1, and Senior Secondary 2. He warned that this could derail their education and jeopardise their future.

He therefore urged those involved to desist immediately or be prepared to face severe consequences.

“Henceforth, coaching centres should not take students from schools and register them as conventional students.

“This practice is in direct violation of the state’s education ordinance. Proprietors must support, rather than undermine, government efforts to improve education standards in Kwara State,” he said.

In response, the President of the Association of Private Coaching Centres of Nigeria and Proprietor of Lumex Tutors, Mr Olumide Agboola, endorsed the government’s stance, stating that any coaching centre found guilty should be sanctioned according to the law.

Similarly, the Proprietor of Gama Tutors, Mr Thomas Adebiyi, assured the government that all centres would comply with the directives and immediately cease such unethical practices, pledging to adhere strictly to the association’s rules and regulations.
