Kwara NUJ Canvasses Better Welfare For Home Media Workers

    The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council has advocated urgent intervention to improve the welfare of media practitioners in Kwara State-owned media organizations.

    The union made the call during its Congress on January 30, 2024, at the Press Centre, Ilorin, where issue of the welfare of home media (Radio Kwara, Kwara Television, and The Herald Newspaper) personnel took centre stage.

    Expressing concern over the prevailing working conditions, the union urged the government to swiftly come to the aid of the media outfits.

    The Congress, which observed the role of the media in shaping democratic governance, called on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to address the concerns of the state-owned media outfits promptly.

    In a resounding call for action, the NUJ urged the Governor, as a listening leader, to attend to the yearnings and agitations of the home media professionals, acknowledging the crucial role they play in the dissemination of information about policies and programmes of government as well as upholding democratic values.

    The Congress also advocated a harmonious relationship between the government and the media within the state, stressing that unified cordiality would facilitate progress.

    Recognizing the significance of symbiotic relationship between the government and media professionals, the NUJ passionately called for an enabling environment that allows the media to thrive, and ensures that practitioners carry out their assigned duties in line with the constitutional provisions.

    The Congress emphasized the commitment of the union to collaborate with the government, pledging continued partnership toward bringing development to the state.

    The Congress noted that NUJ, as the voice of journalists in Nigeria, remains committed to advocating welfare and rights of its members, and would actively pursue a conducive environment for the media to flourish.
