People Democratic Party (PDP) kwara state chapter has elected former speaker of the kwara State House of Assembly, Babatunde Mohammed, as its chairman, through a consensus arrangement by all stakeholders in the party.
The arrangement has Umaru Gunu Mohammed as deputy chairman and Alh. Abdulrazak Lawal, as secretary.
For the position of publicity secretary Tunde Ashaolu retains the office.
Other officers elected under the arrangement include Bisi Fakayode, chairman, South Senatorial zone, Baba Jimoh, chairman, North Senatorial Zone and Haliru Dansoho, as Youth Leader.
Ex Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, however charged the new executive to commence work towards 2023 election said “As soon as you leave this venue work should begin”
“The peaceful conduct of this Congress has confirmed to me that we are indeed ready to take back power in Kwara,” he said.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman of the party in the state said that he is not unaware of the task ahead. But he said that he is ready to do what is necessary.
“We will start work from the grassroots and work our walk our way up.
“We will use the next local government to tell Kwara people that we are back,” he said.
Affirming the arrangement and election of the party executives, Hon John Akwarashi, leading the election committee of national headquarters of PDP, said that it was gratifying that the information they heard from Abuja that Kwara was choosing the consensus option was confirmed here in Ilorin.
“It is clear that this choice of officers are the choice of the majority of the party members,” he said.
Also affirming, Mallam Shehu Abdulkadir, team leader from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said that it’s duty is to observe and ascertain if the officers were chosen through laid down procedure of the party rules.
“From what we have seen it clear that the choice by concensus is the overwhelming choice of the party members,” he said.
The event which took place at the Atlantic Event Palace, Offa -Ajase Ipo Road Ilorin had as part of those in attendance, the former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, former state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, former minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi and Abubakar Kanike, former House of Reps member.
The outgone chairman who midwifed the new exco being inaugurated, Eng. Kola Shittu, said that the concensus option was a popular choice from all stakeholders of the party in the state.
