Kwara Public Schools Beat Private To Win Millions In Revenue Tax Quiz Competition

Government Day Secondary School, Gaa Akanbi has won N2.5m  grand prize of the 2024 Kwara Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) Tax Quiz Club competition held in Ilorin on Thursday.

Govt. Sec. Sch Lafiagi took the second prize of N1.5m and Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Model College Ilorin, took the third prize of N1m.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara in his speech said that his administration is committed to creating an environment for financial literacy.

AbdulRahman said that the event underlines the importance of taxation and financial literacy, thereby promoting tax awareness and improved Internally Generated Revenue(IGR) in the state and Nigeria at large.

“Financial literacy is crucial to the growth and development of the state and nation in general.

“This event is not a contest, but an an educational  platform to inform the young ones about taxation and financial management”, he said.

The governor commended the KWIRS, teachers and parents for their efforts at educating the students.

“I congratulate the participants and declare you are all winners. I encourage you to continue your pursuit of knowledge and I wish you the best”, AbdulRazaq said.

Mrs Shade Omoniyi Executive Chairman, KWIRS in her opening address said that the importance of taxation cannot be over emphasised.

Omoniyi said that a total of 154 schools participated in the maiden competition with 73 public schools  and 81 private schools participating.

She said that the most important part of the competition was the conduct of the preliminary with Computer Based Tests(CBT), making the exercise seamless for the competitors.

The executive chairman appreciated the commitment of the Kwara Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in reshaping education in the state.

She encouraged the students to continue to pursue knowledge regardless of the outcome of the quiz competition.

Mrs Funmilola Oguntubi, the convener of the quiz competition in her speech said the portal for the competition opened in April.

Oguntubi while highlighting the past activities and winners of the  competition, wished the contestants the best in the quiz

Kwara Commissioner for education Saadatu Modibbo-Kawu said that the event would help to increase the understanding of  tax payments.

Modibbo-Kawu said it would build the minds of the students towards payment of tax when they grow, thereby contributing to the economic growth of the state and nation at large.

“I urge you all to use the knowledge gathered here today to build a brighter future for yourselves”, she said.
