Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq has taken the uncommon step by inviting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the alleged diverted local governments money.

AbdulRazaq made this call in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) Rafiu Ajakaye on Tuesday 14 July, 2020. Said he had nothing to hide.

The governor stated that he had nothing to hide; even as he held that a panel of inquiry would also be set up to investigate disbursement of funds. In addition, he called on the Kwara State House of Assembly to hold a public hearing on the matter.

‘‘For the sake of accountability and transparency; I am officially inviting the EFCC to come and probe the funds so far received as allocations and disbursed to the 16 local government between May 29 and now”

”Our conscience is clear, we have nothing to hide. But for abundance of caution, we will be tasking not just the EFCC; but also a panel of inquiry with members drawn from various backgrounds to investigate the LG funds and expose any mismanagement or diversion of funds if found”

”Similarly, I appeal to the House of Assembly which comprises the elected representatives of the people with oversight powers to hold a public hearing on the said matter.’’

Abdulrazaq, who stated that the move was a reaction to insinuations in some quarters; also affirmed his belief in local government autonomy. Further, he threatened consequences for any member of his cabinet found guilty of any breaches.

‘‘I have always believed that the local governments should be allowed to manage their own funds; with minimal or no supervision by the State as the law may allow. Lastly, any official found to have diverted or mismanaged public funds under me would be made to account for same as prescribed under the law.”
