Kwara Varsity Slashes School Fees For Students With Disabilities, Increases Staff Allowance

The Kwara State University, (KWASU) has announced a reduction of N100,000 in the payable school fees for students with disabilities.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, announced the waiver on Sunday.

Similarly, he said the institution was implementing a ₦50,000 monthly allowance for staff with disabilities with increased employment opportunities for sign language interpreters.

Professor Jimoh disclosed this while speaking at an event organised to mark the 2024 International Day of Persons With Disabilities by the institution’s disability support office and the Department of Special Education.

According to a statement by the university’s Acting Director of Relations, Dr. Saidat Aliyu, the VC spoke on the theme: “Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Creating an Accessible and Equitable World.”

In his speech, the vice chancellor highlighted several policies implemented by the university as part of its dedication to creating an inclusive educational environment where every member of the university community actively participated in all aspects of campus life.

Aliyu quoted the VC as saying among the initiatives listed “were a school fee waiver of ₦100,000 for all students living with a disability, a ₦50,000 monthly allowance for staff with disabilities, and increased employment opportunities for sign language interpreters.“
