After intense competition, Stepping Stone College, Ilorin emerged the overall winner of the 2023 Kwara Internal Revenue Service, (KWIRS) Tax Quiz Competition and cashed home a sum of N2.5 million.
The competition which came in three categories – teachers, schools, and students saw Eucharistic Heart of Jesus College as the first runner-up with N1.5 million price and Government Secondary School Lafiagi, second runner-up with N1 million in the school category.
For the students, the overall winner cashed home N400,000, the first runner-up N300,000 while the second runner-up was given N200,000.
The overall winner in the teacher category won N150,000, the first runner-up N100,000, and the second runner-up N50,000.
Speaking at the event, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG,) Alhaji Mahe Abdulkadir promised to invest more in education as well as further encourage the KWIRS on their developmental initiatives.
Also speaking at the event the state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’daatu Modibo Kawu lauded the initiative, a process that led to the emergence of the winners and reaffirmed the commitment of government AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq led administration to the development of education in the state.
She noted that the just concluded annual quiz was crucial “based on mental development, academic excellence and futuristic capacity building among our students.”
She disclosed that the Ministry of Education was always interested in embracing innovative approaches towards healthy academic competitions that would boost self-confidence amongst students.
Earlier, in her opening speech, the Executive Chairman of the KWIRS, Shade Omoniyi said the programme was designed to encourage reading, learning, and dedication among the students and their tutors, noting that 231 entrants competed, but were trimmed to 92 then 18 before the six finalists eventually contested and winners emerged.
