The President National Association of Kwara state Students (NAKSS), Com. Abdullahi Abdulkadri Wakili has appealed to Governor Abdulraham Abdulrasaq to increase the bursary for the Kwara origins in tertiary institutions across the country.
The President also called on the Governor to put an end to the ongoing industrial action at the state owned colleges of education and play a role by putting an end to the strike of the Academic staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the country.
The NAKSS boss made the disclosure when led other officials of the association in a courtesy visit to the Governor on Friday.
Comrade Wokili revealed various issues affecting students of Kwara State origin thereby seeking feasible solutions as they are optimistic that His Excellency will bring them to fruition.
He said ” the problems affecting students are the ongoing industrial action by the academic staff of the state owned Colleges of Education, disbursement and increment of bursary and provision of Vehicles to serve as source of mobility.
“Others are funds for proposed programmes that are expected to have positive impacts in the lives of our students, your role in the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), appointment of Special Adviser on Student affairs and Construction of secretariat, which will serve as a physical meeting place and will give the Kwara State students.
The students president acknowledged the visible achievements which the Governor has marked in the educational sector of the state over the three years of his administration.
“Worthy of mention were the institution of minimum wage for the Non-academic staff in the state owned Colleges of Education inspite of the decline in federal allocation, accreditation of various courses in state owned tertiary institutions and the construction and repair of roads to make the institutions easily accessible.
“Even the state owned primary and secondary schools have not escaped his compassion as constructions and renovations were embarked in the 16 local governments of the State.
According to him Governor Abdulrasaq listened attentively to all the requests and in his usual and unparalleled magnanimity promised to look into our requests.
He urged the students of colleges of education not to loss hope as the COEASU strike is insight to end noting that his Excellency promised to reachout to the lecturers.
He urged the students that the union will continue to prioritize their welfare as education remains the backbone of any nation building.
