A media research and data analytic organisation (Dataphyte) says it is important for Nigeria to get the right data for the 2023 elections to achieve a credible poll.
The Executive Director of the organisation Mr Joshua Olufemi, said this was necessary because everything about election was about data, “starting from election planning, number of registered voters, election results, no of collected PVCs, implementation and number of Polling units, all required the use of data”.
Mr Olufemi spoke while unveiling Dataphyte election platform and handbook in Abuja, to aid accurate fact check of the 2023 election incidence.
According to him, the initiative was also geared towards capturing real time election incidence for the purpose of research analysis and to provide election results update to Nigerians.
In their separate remarks the Founder, Dean Initiative Mr Semiye Michael and Executive Director Center for Journalism, Innovation and Development CJID Dr Tobi Oluwatola and others agreed that the initiative was apt and would enhance information fact check as well as accurate analysis of real time events during the elections.
The Data Analyst for Dataphyte Mr Denis Amata, said available data from INEC shows that the 2023 elections had 93.46 registered voters out of which the youth accounted for majority of the figures.
In his words ” something we have noticed in the trends of elections is voter, apathy from 2007 to 2019, and we have seen a decline in voter turnout. Though INEC is targeting a higher turnout this time around.”
” We are hoping that with the new technologies in place, it will change the narrative, at least we are looking at 40 per cent turnout this time ” Amata said.
Mr Amata added that the election handbook would be relevant in providing quick update about the political party candidates, their assessment, performance and solutions would be recommended for future reference.
