The Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the appointments of General Managers into the state-owned media outfits as timely and a welcome development.

The union specifically expressed delight with the reappointment of Mr Tajudeen Kayode Aremu and Mr Yomi Clement Adeboye as the helmsmen of the state Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kwara) and the state Printing and Publishing Corporation (The Herald) respectively and the choice of Mr Rasaq Ayobami Akanbi as that of Kwara State Television.

In a statement issued in Ilorin, the state Chairman of NUJ, Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed and the Assistant Secretary, Mahmood Olayinka Alaya, recalled that the duo of Aremu of Radio Kwara and Adeboye of The Herald made hard work, resilience and professionalism their watchword in their first coming, urging them to prioritize welfare of their staffers the more.

The union also called on the two General Managers to work on the challenges confronting the media houses and consolidate on the gains recorded in their first tenure.

It, however, lauded the appointment of Akanbi, a retired Director of the state information services, as the General Manager of Kwara Television, saying that it would stimulate efficient service delivery.

The NUJ noted that the choice of Akanbi as the helmsman of Kwara Television is a round peg in a round hole as a frontline broadcaster, content creator and having served meritoriously as Manager News in the television station before his redeployment to the mainstream of the state civil service.

It implored the state government to improve on the finances and infrastructure of the three state-owned media houses, adding that they also require functional equipment to meet contemporary needs.

The union thanked the state government for selecting the three renowned journalists to superintend the media houses in a trying time for professionalism.
