His Excellency,
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President of Nigeria,
Aso Villa,
Abuja.
Dear Mr. President,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing this letter with from the very depth of my heart and what is left of my undying belief in this dear Country of ours to bring to your attention the ever-growing economic hardship faced by many citizens and the subsequent protests that have emerged as a response to these challenges.
Over the past 14-months, our nation has experienced significant economic difficulties, including inflation, unemployment (due to thousands of job loss as a result of multinationals exiting the country to set up in neighboring countries), incessant rising cost of living, and insecurity. These challenges have placed a severe strain on countless families and individuals, leading to a decline in living standards and heightened financial insecurity.
As a result, there have been widespread protests across various regions. These demonstrations, while peaceful in many instances, underscore the deep frustration and desperation felt by the populace. It is evident that citizens are demanding more effective measures to address their economic concerns and improve their quality of life.
In light of these developments, I respectfully urge your administration to consider the following actions;
1. **Economic Relief Programs:** This goes beyond the distribution of N5000 stipends to the most vulnerable households as that is clearly not sustainable as seen in the last administration. This administration should implement targeted relief measures to support those most affected by economic hardship, including subsidies for essential goods, introducing unemployment benefits, and support for small businesses, and enforcement of the newly approved minimum wage payment by the 36 states of the federation.
2. **Job Creation Initiatives:** Invest in programs that stimulate job creation and provide vocational training to equip individuals with skills relevant to the current job market. While applauding efforts of the Ministry of Communication, Innovation and digital economy for the creation and driving of the 3MTT program, it is also pertinent for other crucial ministries and federal parastatals to roll out initiatives to cushion the effects of the current hardship nationwide
3. **Dialogue and Engagement:** Foster open channels of communication between the government and the public to address grievances and collaborate on solutions. This includes listening to and engaging with community representatives to address these issues as some are peculiar to certain states and regions – using insecurity as a case study
4. **Transparency and Accountability:** Ensure transparency in policy implementation and financial management to build trust and confidence among citizens.
5. **Long-Term Economic Strategy:** Just as your excellency performed in Lagos during your years as the Governor and those of your successors who all adhered to the blueprint and maintained the standard to govern Lagos to what it is today. The most important criteria of a leader is VISION. Develop and communicate a clear, long-term economic strategy that focuses on sustainable growth and equitable development.
Addressing these issues promptly and effectively will not only alleviate current hardships but also strengthen our nation’s social fabric and economic resilience. Your leadership and proactive measures are crucial during this challenging time.
It is also worthy of note sir, that regardless of who voted for who or what fraction any citizen belongs to, we all are Nigerians and that comes first before any religious, ethnic or political inclination. We all want a Nigeria that works for all where the aforementioned issues become a thing of the past and we are all once again proud to be called Nigerians. Let’s build a country where our youths will take great pride in living and working in Nigeria as opposed to traveling abroad for greener pastures.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to seeing positive changes that reflect the needs and aspirations of our people.
Sincerely,
Yahaya Buhari
