The five aggrieved governors in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are expected to endorse Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi in Ibadan on January 5.
The governors who have continued to call for the resignation of PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, have not been part of Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign.
The governors are insisting that the presidential candidate of the PDP and the national chairman of the party cannot come from the same zone.
According to The PUNCH, Governors Nyesom Wike (Riveres), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Samuel Ortom (Benue) will announce Obi as their preferred presidential candidate during the flag off of Makinde’s re-election in Ibadan on January 5.
“From all indications, the governors will announce their preferred candidate next week. If there is no major event before January 5 when Makinde will kick off his campaign, they will make the announcement on that day in Ibadan,” an aide of one of the governors said.
The group’s choice of Obi is said to be fuelled by former President Olusegun Obasanjo who lobbied them that the next president should come from the South East.
Obasanjo had met the governors in London in August where he advised them to support Obi, saying justice and fairness demand that South-East should produce the next president.
