PSC wants private Police orderlies withdrawn over alleged assault on female officer

Police Service Commission PSC, has said that with the security problems ravaging the nation, there is an urgent need to free many Police orderlies loitering in private houses and following ‘big men’ around.

The Commission said this following the alleged assault on a Police Orderly, Inspector Teju Moses by one Prof. Zainab Abiola, a Lawyer and Human Rights Activist.

Head, Press and Public Relations, of the Commission, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement on Friday in Abuja , said the Commission condemns this act which it considers barbaric and inhuman and that Commission frowns at the abuse of Police Orderlies by Nigerians who now use them as status symbols or convert them to house helps who clean, cook or do menial jobs.

Furthermore, he said while the Commission calls for immediate investigation and prosecution of all characters involved in the show of shame, it notes that the operations of the Special Protection Unit SPU, should be reviewed to ensure that only few Nigerians who genuinely deserve such protection are availed this service.

” It sees the assault as a direct threat to national security and a calculated attempt to ridicule the Nigeria Police Force and what it stands for.”

Specifically, he noted that with the security problems ravaging the nation, there is an urgent need to free many Police Officers loitering in private houses and following ‘big men’ around.

“The Commission calls on the Police hierarchy to quickly put a stop to this practice and concentrate it’s efforts in policing and protecting a greater number of vulnerable Nigerians.”

Recall that that recently the police arrested activist, Prof. Zainab Duke, for assaulting her female orderly and causing grievous assault on the female Police Officer.

Professor, who was arrested alongside her housemaid, Rebecca Enechuido, reportedly assaulted the orderly for refusing to do some domestic chores she assigned her.

Force Public Relations Office, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement in Abuja last Thursday, said the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, strongly condemned the grievous assault of a female Police Officer and directed the express prosecution of the arrested suspects who are currently in Police custody, as the preliminary investigation shows overwhelming evidence of culpability on the part of the Professor and her domestic staff.

The IGP has equally tasked the investigative team to ensure that the fleeing suspect is arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
