The National Senior Citizens Center, NSCC has called for more concerted efforts among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs of government to improve the quality of life of older persons in the country.
The Director General, Dr. Emem Omokaro made the call at the end of a two-day workshop for Desk officers on the implementation of strategic Roadmap on Ageing and other project activities of the agency in Abuja.
The workshop attended by officers from 40 MDAs was to train them on how to protect the rights of older persons and promote programs and ideas that would ensure their wellbeing wherever they are.
According to the National plan of Action on Ageing in Nigeria and the National Senior Citizens Center strategic Roadmap, with the increasing number of older persons and their diversities, deliberate steps must be taken to address challenges that come with ageing.
They said over 80 million Nigerians including over three million older persons still live in extreme poverty.
The Director General of NSCC, Dr. Emem Omokaro said the roadmap and action of the Agency would go a long way to address the issues affecting older persons in the country.
He maintained that partnership among stakeholders would address the challenges of older persons and fast track socio economic growth of the country.
The Special Assistant to the President on Humanitarian Affairs Alhaji Isah Bungudu who described senior citizens as blessings to the society urged the participants to use their platforms to ensure that the rights of the elderly are protected.
The ten years Roadmap and NSCC crested logo jackets were presented to the participants for efficient service delivery.(RN)
