Sokoto: Gov. Ahmed Pardons 73 Inmates

The governor of Sokoto state, Dr Ahmed Aliyu, Thursday, invoked his power on prerogative mercy to release 73 inmates who have been serving their jail terms, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Alhaji Nasiru Ahmad Binji, disclosed this in a statement ssued to newsmen in Sokoto.

According to the statement, “In line with the powers conferred on the executive governor by section 212 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto (FCNA) has granted pardon to 73 prison inmates serving various jail terms in Sokoto Correctional Custodial Centers.”

Those granted pardon include six inmates whose life sentences were commuted to 25 years, while 65 were released unconditionally.

According to the commissioner, the gesture was in commemoration of the country’s 63rd independence anniversary celebrations.
