Former National Chairman of People Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Kawu Baraje has expressed the readiness of the party to reclaim the presidency from the current occupier, All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2023.

He said all the machinery to achieve that target is already in place and strategizing.

Baraje made this known at his hometown, Ilorin, Kwara state while addressing journalists on national issues on his 70th birthday celebration at his G.R.A residence.

According to him, In contradistinction to what was the practice when the PDP was in control of government at the federal level, the ruling APC is a party without crisis management machinery.

“In all democracies there are challenges but that of the APC is worst. By the time the crisis snowballs there may not be a party called APC again.”

He, however, said the committee set up by the party, PDP, to bring the aggrieved members together are working tirelessly with some result already coming from it and said apart from that particular committee other groups are also strategizing and meeting on the way the party will reclaim its position at the national politics.

“We have various groups of party stalwarts meeting and strategizing on how to reclaim the presidency come 2023, such as groups of former national chairmen of the party, former secretaries of the party, and former senate presidents and others groups”

Talking about the move by some APC Governors, trying to lure former President to their party, Baraje said “President Goodluck Jonathan has enormous political experience, he knows what is good for him and cannot be lured into joining the ruling APC”

“Former President Jonathan is an experienced person; he was a deputy governor, governor, vice president and the president”

“He knows what is good for him, he has enough experience I have worked with him. He’s very tolerant and cool-headed”

“After the outcome of the 2015 election had shown that he has lost, his aides were asking him to go for broke and reject the election results that he shouldn’t accept the outcome of the election, and he didn’t argue with them, he allowed them to say whatever they wanted to say before leaving them and going to a place where he made the historic phone call to President Buhari.

“When some APC governors left their NEC meeting for Dr Jonathan’s house to meet him that they wanted to congratulate him on his birthday some PDP leaders called me and said ‘chairman let’s go there and stop him from welcoming them’ I said ‘No, there is no problem he knows what he’s doing, he’s experienced and that if they are not careful one or two among the governors may eventually decamp to the PDP,” Baraje said.

“Zoning is a tradition that brings peace and harmony. We take it very seriously in PDP. There is a committee working on that. PDP will have its convention and the leaders that will emerge will be a sign to know where the presidential candidate will come from”
