ARCON DG lauds Unilorin on ‘Pitch-A-Ton Initiative, as Ajayi Crowther Varsity Emerges Winner

The Director General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, ARCON, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo has lauded the University of Ilorin on its efforts at giving the students of media and communication practical exposure to advertising.

ARCON DG made the commendation at the 4th edition of Pitch-A-Ton, a creative contest initiative of the Mass Communications Department of the University of Ilorin, held at the Auditorium hall of the University on Monday.

“This is an important programme to us as critical stakeholders in the industry, that is why we are here in person. There is an urgent need to fill the gap between the town and gown, and this is a great initiative by the University of Ilorin to fill that gap.

“No doubt, an initiative like this would go a long way in helping communication students to be employable immediately they graduate from the institution and make them a value added to the advertising industry.

“We as critical stakeholders in the advertising industry, have identified the need for more industry engagement and we are ready to take it up as a responsibility to reach out to more institutions and as well looking forward to them reaching out to us,” he said.

In his open remarks, the vice-chancellor of the institution, Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN commended the department, saying “this initiative speaks to our vision at the University of Ilorin.

“The vision of ensuring that our students are employable. Indeed, the future of education is in this kind of competition because the only way to do is by doing.”

The VC, however, challenged the convener and other stakeholders on a scale-up plan for the initiative, and said “Yes, a great initiative, but what is next after here? How to make all these beautiful ideas a reality?

He however said, “I want to put it to the sponsor of this initiative ‘Combs Luxury and Spa’ to give the winner of this competition a contract to promote your company for a certain period of time as a way of appreciation and encouragement.”

Earlier in her opening speech, the convener of the initiative, who is also the head of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, Dr. Kadiri Kehinde Kadijat said “The Pitch-A-Ton, was initiated few years ago to give students of Media and Communication practical exposure to the world of advertising and ensure they have a seamless transition from academia to the real world.

“We want our students to have a knowledge of how advertising is being conducted in real life. This is a platform for media and communication students to come together to pitch on a particular idea of a client, that is why we chose a real product that exists.”

She however called on other higher institutions to encourage their students to participate in such a programme saying it would enable them, including lecturers to have better and real-life knowledge of the advertising industry.

Meanwhile, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo state emerged as the overall winner with the University of Ilorin and Kwara State Polytechnic coming second and third respectively.

The participating higher institutions include: Kwara State University (KWASU), University of Osun, Summit University, University of Ibadan, Fountain University, Newland Polytechnic, Lens Polytechnic, and Offa Polytechnic.

The panel of judges was made up of Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, Director General, Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Martha Onyebuchi, Director of Regulatory, Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Ozoemena Mbanefo, founder, Oxygen Academy, Lagos, Ezra Okebisi, founder, Citycrier communication limited and Olushola Adegborioye, deputy managing Director, Creativexone limited, Lagos.
