There is palpable tension in Ikorodu, Lagos State as some policemen have reportedly stabbed an unidentified soldier to death in the area.
The incident happened at the border town of Ogijo, between Ogun State and Lagos State.
According to reports, the policemen ran away to Ogijo Police Station when they discovered the victim was an officer.
A source in the area, who spoke to our correspondent, said he narrowly escaped death as people are shooting in the area.
The source said, “I could not identify those shooting cause it was already dark. As I came down from the bus, they just started shooting and everybody scampered for safety. I narrowly escaped death tonight.”
Meanwhile, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, has said the policeman who killed a soldier in the Odogunyan area of the state is not under the state Police Command.
Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident said it happened in Odogunyan, which falls under Lagos State not Ogun. He added that it was a mobile policeman who killed the soldier stating that Ogun had no mobile base in Ogijo area.
Reacting to the police station that was burnt, Oyeyemi said, “That is a misconception, a mobile man serving in Lagos was the one that killed the soldier. I don’t know why the soldiers will go and start burning Ogijo Police Station when the issue happened in Odogunyan, which is in Lagos.
“We don’t have any mobile base in Ogijo, so how can the mobile policeman be from Ogijo?” he questioned.
Similarly, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday night took to Twitter to say that the soldier’s killing took place at Ogijo and not Odogunyan.
He said, “There are stories making the rounds that riots have broken out in Odonguyan, Ikorodu. We wish to clarify that the unrest is at Ogijo, Ogun State, though very close to Ikorodu, Lagos. Our officers are at alert & would not allow any breakdown of law and order within Lagos State.” (Punch)
