A non-governmental organization (NGO), UN-POLAC Foundation, has organized a sensitization programme on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) to promote peace and development in Nigeria.
The two-day sensitization programme which commenced on Monday held at the University of Ilorin, North Central Nigeria was designed to enhance the knowledge of Lecturers and Master Students of the Department of Peace and Strategies Studies of the Institution with seasoned scholars of Peace Studies as resource persons.
In an interview with Accurate News Nigeria, Dr. Abiola Adimula, an associate professor at the Centre for Peace and Strategies Studies at the University of Ilorin, lauded the initiator of the programme UN-POLAC Foundation said peace can never be overemphasized in any given society.
“I want to commend POLAC for the work they are doing through the United Nations in the interet of peaceful coexistence within the communities. There is no how and no way peace will not be relevant at all times.
“This programme has exposed our students to the area of scholarship and practice and how to manage conflict, how to resolve issues among themselves and the general public.
“I believe with the quality of knowledge they have acquired they will go out there in their various communities and be a good conflict manager and further expand the knowledge to other people in their domain,” she stated
Earlier in his opening remark, Kwara State Director, United Nations-POLAC, Reverend (Dr.) Reuben Idowu Ibitoye stated that the programme was training and sensitization of the University of Ilorin Team of UN-POLAC.
“As a team, the management of the University of Ilorin directed us to meet the postgraduate students of Peace and Strategies Studies to sensitize them on peace and train them on how to mediate, reconcile, and settle crisis. What are the remote causes of crisis and how crisis can be de-escalated? These were some of the things we discussed with them and we thank God it was a great success programme. Both the lecturers and students who participated attested to the robustness of the programme.“
In their separate remarks, the participating students Mr. Ologunshuwa Damilola and Mss Ayodele Attah Onatunde, commended the UN-POLAC Foundation for championing what they described as impactful training on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) said the knowledge gained had further broadened their education on peace and strategies studies and promised to go out and be a good apostle of justice and peace.
