UNICAL, OAU students kills self after being defrauded, over poor academic performance

A 100 level student of the University of Calabar, (UNICAL) identified as Veronica Bako Myomuter, 18 years of age has reportedly taken her life after she was swindled by yet-to-be-identified online fraudsters.

Veronica who was studies  History and International Studies at the University, allegedly committed suicide after losing her school fees to some unknown fraudsters.

According to reports, Veronica who was an indigene of Katsina-Ala in Benue State was reported to have ingested a toxic substance, on Thursday, August 6, 2020, at her house.

It is reported that the deceased was scammed of the sum of N100,000 meant for her faculty charges which she couldn’t pay before the outbreak of COVID-19.

The deceased allegedly noticed a social media message sent to her, asking her to put money into a cash doubling scheme, with assurances that she would get double of her investments.

After a lot of persuasion, Veronica allegedly transferred N100,000, believed to be her school fees. On discovering that she had been scammed, she allegedly became distressed and subsequently took her life. Meanwhile, mates and former classmates of the deceased have taken to social media to express shock over her demise.

In a related development, a  student of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU has reportedly taken his own life. The OAU student identified as Oboh Emmanuel took his own life due to his poor academic performance.

According to information shared by a friend, Thompson on Facebook, the OAU student died as a result of academic depression.

Thompson said Oboh drank otapiapia (local rat poison) which led to his death.

He wrote: “Emmanuel took his life out of depression (Academics). I use to envy dis (sic) young man in Secondary schools. Rest in Peace, Oboh Emmanuel.”
