Kwara State Government on Thursday called on people living in flood-prone areas to vacate their respective locations in view of the recent warnings of impending flooding by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
The call was made by the state Commissioner of Environment, Remilekun Banigbe, via a statement made available to the Accurate News Nigeria “appeal to the people residing around water banks or flood plains to kindly vacate such dangerous areas for safety reasons. This is especially necessary given the recent warnings of impending flooding by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
“The Ministry is elated to note that the longstanding perennial flooding within the Unity Obbo Road axis of Ilorin metropolis has stopped.
“This is due to the untiring efforts of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration, which finally led to the ongoing dredging/ channelisation of the Asa River after many years of palliatives.
“Notwithstanding, these great efforts can be better complemented when citizens avoid arbitrary dumping of refuse on waterways and road medians. That way, we can together make perennial flooding a thing of the past in our state, including in the capital city Ilorin” the statement read.
