Apart from a physical examination to detect the size and consistency of your Prostate gland, the next most efficient method is a blood test called a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). This test measures the level of PSA in the blood. PSA is a substance made by the prostate. The levels of PSA in the blood can be higher in men who have prostate cancer. In addition, the following are warning signs that could indicate prostate cancer:Weak or interrupted flow of urine, Pain or burning sensation during urination, Difficulty starting or stopping the flow of urine, Blood in urine or semen, Frequent urge to urinate, especially at night, Pain or discomfort in the pelvic area, Pain or discomfort during ejaculation, Weak erections, Pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs, Loss of bladder control and an enlargement of the prostate gland. If a doctor detects an enlarged Prostate gland, a prostate biopsy is one of the most accurate ways to diagnose prostate cancer. However, since it is an invasive procedure, other screening methods such as the PSA are done first. (Tribune)
