As we commemorate Workers Day 2024, the Nigerian Workforce Strategy and Enlightenment Centre (NIWOSEC) calls on the Governments at all levels – Federal, States, and Local Councils to recognize and maximize the opportunities inherent in the Nigerian workforce. We urge the authorities to place Nigerian workers as the most important resources ahead of other natural resources such as oil, gold, and others.
NIWOSEC is deeply concerned about the underutilization of the working population in Nigeria, particularly among public service workers. The failure of the government to adequately remunerate these hardworking individuals not only undermines their contributions but also makes life difficult for them upon retirement.
Nigeria boasts of a vibrant and dynamic workforce that forms the backbone of the nation’s economy. It is imperative that the government recognizes the value of its workforce and takes proactive measures to ensure their welfare and well-being. Adequate remuneration, training, and opportunities for career advancement are essential to harnessing the full potential of Nigerian workers.
NIWOSEC calls on the government to prioritize the needs of the workforce by:
1. Ensuring fair and competitive wages for all workers, including those in the public service.
2. Implementing policies that promote job security, career growth, and skills development.
3. Creating a conducive working environment that fosters productivity and innovation.
4. Providing comprehensive retirement benefits and support for retired workers.
5. Investing in the education and training of the workforce to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving economy.
It is time for the government to shift its focus and recognize that Nigerian workers are the most valuable assets of the nation.
By investing in the workforce, we can unlock the full potential of our human capital and drive sustainable economic growth and development.
