Workers under the auspices of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), Kwara State Water Corporation branch have called for the immediate removal of the acting General Manager of the corporation, Engr Sheu Umar, over alleged poor leadership.

They urged the state government to replace the embattled acting General Manager with a progressive minded person with progressive policies.

This was contained in a letter titled “Need for immediate Intervention of Your Excellency on Kwara State Water Corporation under the leadership of Acting General Manager, Engr. Sheu Umar”, which was addressed to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The letter was signed by the AUPCTRE branch Chairman and Secretary Comrade Issa Olusesan and Comrade Kareem Ayuba respectively.

They demanded total restructuring of the state water corporation under the leadership of the present management.

The aggrieved workers also called for setting up of a technical committee consisting of professional staff, organized labour and all stakeholders to restructure the water sector in the state.

They alleged poor operational system of most of the water works, maintenance culture, working environment and lack of security of properties of the state government in the water corporation, which had resulted to poor and low production of water supply under the leadership of the current management.

In the letter, the union warned that it may not guarantee industrial peace in the state water corporation in the event that Engr Sheu Umar was not immediately removed and replaced as acting General Manager.

The letter to the Governor read partly, “Our union wishes to appreciate all your efforts in the provision of portable and drinkable water for the citizens of the state, regular payment of salaries, regular payment of running cost for minor repairs in the corporation, regular supply of chemical and rehabilitation of some water works to mention but few.

“Your Excellency sir, it is necessary to call your attention to the un-care attitude of the leadership of this organization towards the effectiveness and efficiency of the water sector in the state despite all your efforts in ensuring adequate and regular water supply to the citizens”

However, effort to reach the acting General Manager of the state water corporation via his mobile telephone handset proved abortive as his line was not going through as of the time of filing this report.
