World Environment Day: Experts Emphasize Awareness for Sustainable Land Restoration

Environmental experts and stakeholders have underscored the importance of public awareness regarding environmental changes, saying it is a crucial step towards fostering sustainable land restoration.

This call to action was highlighted during Environmental Week 2024, organized by the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers, NIEE, Oyo State Chapter, a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers in Ibadan.

Speaking at the event with the theme, “Land Restoration, Certification, Drought Resilience,” the Director, Quality Assurance Directorate at the Polytechnic Ibadan, Dr. Kamoru Ogunsesan emphasized the role of effective town planning in ensuring safe environment.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Oyo State Chapter, Engineer Abdulwasiu Ajagbe stressed the need for increased public familiarity with environmental changes, noting that understanding the changes will promote sustainable practices.

One of the students who attended the event, Adekola Adeniyi, described it as a “timely and beneficial initiative,” saying that the event “significantly enhanced my awareness and understanding of environmental changes and the importance of sustainable land restoration.”

Another student, Amidat Odunayo, said, “The event is a big opportunity for me to gain more understanding on the usefulness of plants and environmental changes.”

Other invited guests present at the event included Dr. Temidayo Omoniyi, Acting Head of the Department of Wood Products Engineering at the University of Ibadan; Dr. Taofeeq Yekinni, from the Department of Agriculture Extension and Rural Development at the University of Ibadan; and Engineer Peter Abegunrin, from the Department of Agric Engineering at LAUTECH, Ogbomosho.

Highlights of the event was the official inauguration of Eco Vanguard Club to enhance the awareness and understanding of environmental changes and the importance of sustainable land restoration.

NIEE’s Environmental Week 2024 organized to commemorate world Environment day, seeks to emphasize the role of collective efforts required to address environmental challenges, highlighting the place of education and awareness in achieving sustainable development goals.
