Ayu finally steps down as PDP Chairman after series of fuss

The national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu on Tuesday, resigned from his position as party leader.

Ayu was replaced by the Deputy National Chairman, (North) Umar Iliya Damagum.

Damagum will assume office on Acting capacity, pending the determination of the case in court.

The embattled Ayu had been forbidden by a Makurdi high court from posing as the party’s chairman while the substantive suit, whose hearing has been postponed until April 17, 2023, was being decided.

A member of the PDP from Benue, Terhide Utaan, who is the plaintiff before Justice W. I Kpochi, obtained the order restraining Ayu from parading himself as national chairman of the party.

After obtaining the court order, the plaintiff spoke to journalists in Makurdi and stated that it is wrong for Ayu to continue holding the position of the national chairman and further splinter the party after being suspended by his Igyorov Ward Exco on Sunday.

Ayu was suspended late last week for anti-party activities after the party lost the presidential election.

However, the former lawmaker claimed that only the ward lacked the authority to suspend him in a statement released on Monday by his media assistant Simon Imobo-Tswam.
