The Director General of Micheal Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies ( MINILS) Ilorin has joins President Muhammadu Buhari and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to salute all Nigerians on the occasion of June 12 2021 Democracy Day.
WHY JUNE 12 MATTERS ?
Today’s celebration assumes special importance. It marks 22nd years of uninterrupted democratic process in our dear country. It also marks the 2nd anniversary of the historic official proclamation of June 12th as Nigeria’s real democracy Day by President Muhammdu Buhari in 2019. By that singular courageous and just decision, President Buhari in 2019 conclusively and commendably put a welcome closure to the tragedy of the annulment of 1993 popular election won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola. In addition to post humous investiture of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola late Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Babagana Kingibe with National Honours, President Buhari also commendably re-named the Abuja National Stadium as MOSHOOD ABIOLA NATIONAL STADIUM.
“Today Nigerians celebrate and hail the statesmanship of President Muhammadu Buhari in correcting the injustice of annulment of 1993 globally adjudged free and fair elections. President Buhari’s decision made the point that never again would Nigerians allow violation of peoples’ mandate through annulment and non- democratic usurpation of power”
Comrade Aremu, however said the institute is set to partner president Buhari and Governor AbdulRazaq to deepen democracy said “At the root of promotion of democracy is education of the citizens. MINILS established in 1984 is the only Institute which has the mandate of providing workers education to enhance the capacity of Nigerian and African workers through training and research to ensure dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes at work places. With a vision to be a regional centre of excellence in labour studies and a globally renowned labour institution, MINILS, is set to compliment the efforts of President Buhari in delivering good governance in the context of insecurity and economic crisis. MINILS is poised to partner with the federal government, state governments and major stakeholders both in the public and private sectors to deepen and reflect workplace synergy, to reduce work place conflicts, enhance collective bargaining process, stregthen and deepen democratic process among the unions and their officials and engender cordial labour management relations and best practices”
“MINILS agrees with President Buhari in his Democracy speech that “the twin underlying drivers of insecurity namely poverty and youth unemployment.” We also commend various unprecedented employment generation initiatives of President Buhari that include Interventions led by the government and the Central Bank of Nigeria targeted mostly to the agricultural, services, infrastructure, power and health care sectors of the economy, Anchor Borrowers Programme resulted in sharp decline in the nation’s major food import bill from $2.23billion in 2014 to US$0.59billion by the end of 2018. Rice import bill alone dropped from $1 billion to $18.5 million annually”
Added that Nigeria fast developing not a failed state “The recent record inauguration by President Buhari of the commercial operations of Lagos-Ibadan railway project at the Mobolaji Johnson Railway Station, Ebute Metta, Lagos, shows that Nigeria is NOT a failing state as wrongly presented by African pessimists! On the contrary with other infrastructure development like second Niger Bridge, Lokoja Abuja Kano gas project revival of industrialization Nigeria is a fast developing economy”
“The National Labour Institute Ilorin through its Enterprise Development programme would offer various capacity skill development for workers in formal and informal sectors to promote employability of the youths”
