NMDPRA decries increasing accidents in Filling Stations

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, says it has recorded 244 fire incidences at various filling stations in the country within a period of 5 years and therefore commenced firm enforcement of regulations against erring Operators.

Acting Regional Coordinator of the Agency, Mallam Shu’aibu Alhaji stated this in Kaduna during a stakeholders’ engagement organized for Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, National Association of Road Transport Owners and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association

Mallam Shu’aibu expressed concerned over the increasing cases of accidents especially fire at the oil and gas sub-sector.

According to him, the meeting was necessitated by the need to prevent occurrences of the incidences at the downstream sector, that is among Tanker Drivers and filling stations.

”The law has provided in clear terms that in the case of negligence by any operator, such operator would be sanctioned accordingly”, Mallam Alhaji noted.

In a presentation, the Controller of Health Safety Environmental and Community Directorate Kano State, Mallam Aminu Salihu pointed out that the accidents had resulted in over four hundred deaths in the last five years.

In a remark, the Chairman, National Association of Road Transport Owners Alhaji Babangida Jaafaru attributed most of the accidents to substandard spare parts and called on the agency to collaborate with the Standards Organization of Nigeria, SON for the enforcement of the regulations. (RN)
