Suspended Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Yunusa-Ari Hudu has insisted that he did no wrong in announcing All Progressives Congress (APC), Aishatu Dahiru Binani as the winner of the rescheduled April 15 governorship election.

The REC, whose action was immediately denounced by many, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said he followed the due process before declaring the APC standard bearer, popularly known as Binani, governor-elect.

Yunusa-Ari, who spoke with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) monitored in Abuja, said he has no regret doing what he did.

According to him, he acted within the confines of relevant laws in declaring the APC candidate, a decision that was voided by the INEC headquarters.

Although not the state returning officer, Yunusa-Ari had April 16 declared Binani winner of the election while collation of results from 10 local government areas where the supplementary election held were still being awaited.

President Muhammadu Buhari ordered immediate investigation of the roles of those involved in the controversial declaration.

Those directed to probe their men are: INEC, Inspector-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The commission later concluded the results collation and returned incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as winner.

Speaking with the BBC, Yunusa-Ari said:  ”I never demanded any gratification from either of Binani or Fintiri. None of the duo sent anything to me; if they have done so by now they will be demanding their monies back.”

“Votes polled by candidates were disclosed, I don’t have the papers with me here but both in the main and supplementary elections, Binani scored 428, 173 while Fintiri got 422, 303 votes.

“I have no regrets at all as I acted under the law; it is the law that warranted what I did and it shall absolve me.”
